How to Calculate a Tip
A tip is a percentage of the bill that rewards good service. To work it out:
Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100 | Total = Bill + Tip
To split it, divide the total by the number of people.
How Much Should You Tip?
- United States: 15–20% at restaurants is standard.
- India: 5–10% where service is good and no service charge is added.
- Europe: often 5–10%, or just rounding up the bill.
- Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is acceptable; many people tip on the pre-tax bill. This calculator tips on the amount you enter.
How do I split unevenly?
For an even split, use the per-person figure. For uneven shares, calculate the total here and divide it according to what each person ordered.
